TAP News August 2008
Project Update
A survey was carried out in June to establish if bats were present in the vicinity of the proposed pipe.
The conclusions were:
- No trees were found with actual evidence of bats.
- 22 trees were found to have low potential for bats.
- 7 trees were found have moderate potential for bats.
- 3 trees were found to have high potential for bats.
Bats are a protected species and detailed recommendations about how to proceed have been given.
Also in June a dormouse survey was completed. Dormice are also a protected species. There was no evidence of dormice found on the proposed route of the pipe. However, evidence of dormice was found in one small area of coppiced woodland nearby with canopy links to the proposed route. The habitat along the proposed route is generally poor dormouse habitat. Recommendations about how to proceed have been given in view of the close proximity of dormice.
Questions concerning the impact on the archaeology in the valley remain to be resolved. A meeting has taken place between TAP, GGAT and CADW and a series of actions agreed. A small number of trial pits will be dug along the route to provide further detail and to enable a conclusive assessment to be made.
