Project Update
The final 3 ecological surveys requested by the authorities were completed during October and the reports for each of them have now been issued. The surveys were for aquatic invertebrates, water voles and crayfish. There was no evidence showing that water voles or crayfish were present in the stretch of the Angiddy concerned with the project, and there were no rare or protected species of aquatic invertebrate present.
Two trial pits were dug in the lower leat during November to support the archaeological investigations. The pits revealed no traces of any structure relating to the proposed former leat. Apart from some ferrous residues and some pieces of unused charcoal, no finds were made. It would appear that the present path simply overlays an older path rather than part of the leat system. This would also help to explain the anomaly of why the leat would appear to have to flow uphill to the east, before it vanishes entirely. A report detailing the findings will be issued during December.
