Project Update - October

Tree surgeons have been working in the Angiddy valley for the past 2 weeks, felling trees which are alongside the route of the proposed pipeline. The roots of these trees would have been damaged when the trench for the pipeline is dug, leading to the trees ultimately dying and becoming a safety hazard.

Following the granting of planning permission earlier this year, detailed design work for the scheme has been commissioned. This will enable comparative quotations to be obtained from the contractors interested in implementing the scheme.

The concept of the scheme is unchanged. There will be an inlet box in the aperture of the Beaufort Pond dam. This will put water, at up to 200 litres per second, into the pipe buried under the footpath which runs down the Angiddy valley, for a distance of 1 kilometre. A residual flow of at least 83 litres per second, as specified by the Environment Agency, will remain in the Angiddy brook. At the bottom end of the pipeline, the water will pass through a turbine and be returned to the Angiddy brook. The turbine will be housed in a building in the woodland, approximately the size of a single garage, built of local stone, and barely visible from the road. The electricity generated (annual estimated output 145,000 kWh) will be fed into the National Grid via an underground cable.

All of the electricity generated will be sold to the National Grid, which will realise an income of £13,000 per year at current prices. After deducting costs for insurance and routine preventative maintenance there will be in excess of £10,000 per year available to support local community projects. This will increase in future as the price per unit of electricity increases. The scheme will function for an estimated 40 years and will continue to be run by volunteers as a Not For Profit enterprise.

Approximately 25% of the funding for the project is in place. It is hoped that the remaining funding can be obtained in Spring 2011, and that the project can be fully implemented by December 2011.

Project Update - May

Five companies have expressed an interest in the implementation of the project, which is very encouraging. Also a number of funders have been identified who may be willing to contribute towards the project cost. The target is to complete the installation of the project in 2011.

The TAP directors held a meeting recently with several groups, based in and around Tintern, to exchange views on possible future sustainable energy projects in the area, and to discuss how the income from the project could be distributed to support those projects. The groups were:- Brockweir Shop, Tintern Environmental Improvement Group, Tintern Youth Club, St Michael Church, Tintern Village Hall, Tintern Angling Club and Tom Rugg from Big Wide World Learning. Julie Ashton Davies from Community Foundation Wales and Sarah Sawyer from AONB also attended. The meeting was very constructive and a follow up meeting will be held in the summer.

Membership of TAP continues to increase. Kate Humble is a supporter of sustainable energy initiatives and has accepted an invitation to become a member of TAP.

The AGM was held on 26th April. A report will be issued with the June News.

Project Update - April

The project has moved on from the approval stage into the pre-implementation stage and the team is working on 2 major elements.

Firstly to identify funders who are willing to support the project and then to submit the necessary applications. Despite the financial recession there are a number of large and small funders who have expressed an interest and more are being sought. It is anticipated that it will take 6 months to 9 months to obtain the full funding.

The second element is to obtain comparative quotations from companies able to carry out the installation work. At this stage 2 avenues are being pursued. One is to discuss with companies capable of project managing and installing the complete installation, and the other is to discuss with smaller companies who are able to install specific parts of the project. This investigative work will take 4 to 6 months to complete.

Dependent on the success of the above, it is hoped to complete the installation of the full project in 2011.

Project Update - January

Again this month there is no progress to report on the status of both the planning application for the project and the listed building application for the Beaufort pond dam. MCC Planning Department are continuing to go through all of the documentation which has been submitted. We are hoping for a decision in the early months of 2010.

No further requests for information have been received by TAP.
